The
site of Qila el-Daba has an Old Kingdom
cemetery that includes a field of mastabas
surrounded by secondary burials. The tombs
in the cemetery are of three different
substructure plans: a simple, oval subterranean
chamber; rock-cut tombs covered by mudbrick
vaults; and rectangular with a Nubian vault
with arched mudbricks. The tombs have yielded
one of the oldenst copies of the Coffin
Texts, a variety of stone vessels, and
some polychrome funeral scenes.
