Queen Nefertari playing Senet

Nefertari, chief queen of Ramesses II, is shown playing senet, a popular ancient Egyptian board game with strong funerary associations. Nefertari wears the vulture headdress seen on queens and goddesses, and holds a scepter in her right hand. This scene is from the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens (QV 66) in Luxor. It illustrates a vignette from chapter 17 of the Book of the Dead, in which the queen plays against an invisible opponent in her quest for entry into the next world.
