Bastet, whose main cult center was located at Bubastis (modern Tell Basta), is usually shown as a cat-headed woman, or as in this statue, as a cat. Originally, she was probably a lioness deity. Bronze statues like these were found by the thousands along with mummified cats in special cemeteries dedicated to the goddess.
