Inscribed Silk Fragment

This fragment of a piece of silk contains an inscription that reads: “Our Lord, the Sultan, may his victory be glorified.” This sultanic emblem, which was common throughout the Mamluk period, is mirrored across the vertical axis, along with the representation of an eagle. The original textile was woven in silk with blue thread; it is reproduced here in wool. The original is from Assiut.
